Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey on Sunday criticized Elon Musk's decision to rename the platform's Birdwatch feature as "Community Notes."

Birdwatch is a feature on Twitter that allows users to flag information in posts which they consider to be misleading. It was first piloted in 2021, but Musk said on Saturday he wanted to rename Birdwatch to "Community Notes."

He later tweeted that Twitter's mission was to "become by far the most accurate source of information about the world."

What followed was a squabble between Musk and Dorsey on the social media platform, which has stirred a lot of controversy over the past week.

Dorsey, who stepped down as Twitter CEO in 2021, challenged Musk, saying "accurate to who?"

Musk replied: "As judged by the people of Twitter via Community Notes (formerly Birdwatch)."

In response, Dorsey said that Birdwatch was "a far better name" and being more informative was a better goal for Twitter to aim for.

"Birdwatch gives me the creeps," Musk told Dorsey, who recently took responsibility for Musk laying off thousands of employees during his first week as owner of Twitter.

"Community notes is the most boring Facebook name ever," Dorsey said in response to Musk.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO wrote in a tweet to Dorsey that "not everything needs to have 'bird' in the name" and there were "too many bird groups fighting each internally other at Twitter," adding "Angry Birds."

Dorsey said he agreed with Musk, but it wasn't the reason behind the name. "Community" or "notes" weren't the right descriptors, he added.

Birdwatch, now called Community Notes, added a fact-check label to a tweet from the White House on November 2, which credited President Biden with raising Social Security payments. The tweet was deleted one hour after being posted, Insider reported.
