A global outage to internet service provider Fastly is affecting a huge chunk of the internet. Some major websites including Amazon, Reddit, Twitch, news websites CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian and The Verge are either completely offline or working with limited capacity as of 4:10 p.m., India time.

According to Downdetector.com, the website that tracks internet outages, it appears that San Francisco-based Fastly is experiencing a major outage. The outage is said to have begun at 3:00 p.m., India time, and the reason behind the issue is still unknown.

“We’re currently investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services,” the firm told news website TechCrunch.

Outages like these usually occur due to some fault at a central service provider like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Akamai. In this case, the problem is being traced to Fastly, which is a CDN (content delivery network). Fastly says it had begun looking for the “potential impact to performance with our CDN services,” as per TechCrunch.

Customers may continue to experience decreased cache hit ratio and increased origin load as global services return.,” said Fastly at 5:27 pm IST.
