Indonesia offers its first 'golden visa' to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, allowing him to skip airport lines and stay in the country for up to 10 years

Indonesia has granted tech titan Sam Altman the country's first "golden visa."

The visa, announced last week in an attempt to bolster the country's economic development, allows foreigners who invest in the country to remain for five to 10 years.

The visa grants the OpenAI CEO lengthy stays in the country, as well as priority screening and service lanes at airports, said a press release issued by the immigration director general Silmy Karim.

According to a translation of the statement, Karim said the OpenAI CEO has an "international reputation and may bring benefits to Indonesia." He added the country was rolling out "the red carpet" for the tech CEO in return for the potential resources he could provide.

Altman visited the country's capital, Jakarta, in June to discuss AI development, but it's unclear if he applied for the visa or invested in the country. The press release said there were several categories of golden visas not based on capital investment, one of which is given to those of international repute who can benefit the country.

Representatives for Altman did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, made outside normal working hours.

Indonesia has been trying to lure wealthy digital nomads to the country for some time, promoting the island province of Bali as a go-to destination for those who want to work from abroad.

Several other countries, including New Zealand and Portugal, have launched similar "digital nomad visas" in an attempt to capitalize on the rise of remote workers.
