India's trade minister Piyush Goyal who is also in charge of the Indian Railways revealed plans to redo the timetable of the world's largest rail network.

Not just that, Goyal said that the government is inviting people from operations research to offer their expertise in improving the Indian Railways timetable. "I can improve the efficiency by 20% to 25% just by rewriting the timetable," Goyal said on October 21.

Operations research (OR) is an analytical method of problem-solving and decision-making that is more complex than the use of simple data analytics tools and is used in scheduling and time management, urban and agricultural planning, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM), inventory management, network optimization and engineering, packet routing optimization, and risk management. The concept developed during World War-II to make the military more efficient.

Goyal also said that the government is planning to improve the country's railway signalling system and is willing to spend about $15 billion for the same.
