How to take screenshots on Windows 10, 8 and 7

While taking a screenshot on the mobile phone is easy, doing the same on a Windows OS computer is also simple, but at times feels tricky. If you want to save screenshots for future use or share information on your screen with your friends or colleagues, knowing how to capture it saves time and effort.

The process of taking screenshots can help you save evidence that may be deleted later by an aggressor. For example- if you are a victim of cyberbullying, you can capture the screenshot of the evidence and report the aggressor before they delete the evidence. In this article, we will explore how to take screenshots on Windows 10, 8 and 7 OS computers. While there are some methods that are the same on all three OS, others are different.

Win+Shift+S in Windows 10

• In Windows 10 you can press the combination Win+Shift+S. This will prompt a menu of screenshot options.
• You can choose between the options — Rectangular Snip, Freeform Snip, Window Snip and Fullscreen Snip.
• The screenshot gets saved to the clipboard which can now be pasted on to other applications, including email, paint, image editor and chatboxes.

Snip & Sketch in Windows 10

• The Snip & Sketch features can be accessed from the search box in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
• It provides similar screenshot options similar to Win+Shift+S. You can select between Rectangular Snip, Freeform Snip, Window Snip and Fullscreen Snip.
• The additional feature offered by Snip & Sketch feature is the availability of a delay timer. You can delay the screenshot to capture the content of any dropdown menu.

Print Screen (Windows 10, 8, and 7)

• Hit the Print Screen (prt sc, fn+prt sc on some laptops) button at the top right of your keyboard, to capture the entire screen of the window.
• You can now use Ctrl+V to paste it on an email, messaging platform or in paint to save for future use. This method works for all three OS.

Alternate Print Screen (Windows 10 and 8)

• On your Windows 10 or 8 computer, you can click on Win+PrtScn (or Fn+Win+PrtScrn) to capture a screenshot.
• When press this combination, the screenshot gets automatically saved to Pictures > Screenshots.
• This feature saves you the time of pasting it on paint or any image editing application.

Snipping Tool (Windows 10, 8, and 7)

• Alternatively, you can use the Windows Snipping Tool to capture a screenshot.
• The Snipping Tool is available on all Windows OS since Vista, but it is a little different on Windows 10.
• You can access the Snipping Tool by searching for it in the search box in the taskbar.
• In Windows 10, you get all the different options of screenshots — Rectangular Snip, Freeform Snip, Window Snip and Fullscreen Snip. by clicking ‘Mode’. While in Windows 8 and 7, the same is available in New, by clicking on the drop-down menu.
• You can capture any part of the screen by using the Snipping Tool and save the same by clicking the Floppy icon.
• If you don’t like a screenshot, you can grab the same again by clicking New.
