Data security has improved significantly, but data breaches are still happening. The year 2022 saw several large-scale data breaches affecting millions of users. In addition to affecting user data, a few breaches have impacted sensitive company data.

From popular password manager LastPass to microblogging platform Twitter, several companies have been affected by data breaches in 2022. In this post, we look at some of the top data breaches of 2022.

Top data breaches of 2022

Red Cross

In one of the first data breaches of 2022, malicious actors gained access to important files of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The attackers reportedly gained access to data related to over 515,000 “highly vulnerable” people. According to reports, the database mostly included information on people separated from their families due to conflict, migration, and disaster. The data breach reportedly included people’s names, locations, and contact information.

Crypto.com

Crypto.com, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, was also affected by a data breach in January 2022. While only 438 users of the exchange were hit in the breach, the attackers initiated an unauthorized withdrawal of $35 million in bitcoin and Ether. The company claimed that it was able to prevent the unauthorized withdrawal in “majority cases” and all other customers were fully reimbursed.

Samsung

Smartphone giant Samsung was breached twice in 2022 – once in March and once in August. During the first breach, 200 gigabytes of confidential data were obtained, including source code related to Galaxy devices. In the second data breach, the personal information of customers, such as name, contact and demographic information, date of birth, and product registration information, was obtained by the attackers.

Cash App

Mobile payments app Cash App revealed a data breach in 2022 by a former employee who accessed reports that contained information about its US customers. While the company did not reveal how many users were affected by the breach, it revealed that it is contacting 8.2 million current and former customers about the data breach.

SuperVPN, GeckoVPN and ChatVPN

A massive data breach affected the information of over 21 million customers of three VPN apps – SuperVPN, GeckoVPN, and ChatVPN. A database containing information on users of these apps was being sold online. The data included email addresses, passwords, names, and information about the users’ countries.

Cleartrip

Popular travel booking platform Cleartrip confirmed a data breach in July 2022. The data was reportedly sold on a private forum on the dark web. While the company did not reveal the number of users affected and the data obtained, it informed users that some parts of their profiles were compromised. It also advised users to reset their passwords as a “precautionary measure.”

Twitter

Popular social media platform Twitter was also affected by a data breach in 2022. In a blog post, the company confirmed the data breach and revealed that this was due to an update to the company’s code in June 2021. The breach reportedly affected 5.4 million active users and over a million suspended users.

LastPass

Popular password manager LastPass confirmed a data breach in November 2022. The attacker obtained access to certain information of customers, but customer passwords were reportedly not affected in the data breach.
