Apple’s AirDrop is getting a new competitor — Google Nearby Share

  • Google’s Nearby Share feature could gain Self Share mode soon.
  • No need to approve shares between your own devices just like AirDrop.
  • The company can officially reveal this feature during Google I/O 2022.
Files by Google isn’t the most advanced tool but it is easy to use and is free. With the latest beta update, Google’s Pixels are getting back an easy and accessible share option — Nearby Share. It is very much similar to Apple’s AirDrop.

Nearby Share was spotted by Mishaal Rahman from Esperdev. The Nearby Share feature will allow you to transfer files among the devices logged in. It works just like Apple’s AirDrop ecosystem.
This option will let you effortlessly share files between devices that are signed in to the same Google account, without needing to approve the share first. Still, you will see the approval screen when receiving files from someone else’s device.

According to Rahman, this feature is present in the latest version of Google Play Service but is still unavailable to users.

Currently while sharing the files between your devices you have to approve the share on the recipient device. This step is becoming a hurdle in the entire file sharing process making it complicated.

Google has not made any official announcement yet. We can expect that company will officially reveal this feature during Google I/O 2022.
