Google is officially confirmed to be working on a ChatGPT competitor called Bard

In a blog post, Google's CEO Sundar Pichai announced the company's new project, an ‘experimental conversational AI service’ named Bard. Pichai described it as a tool that will respond to user queries and participate in conversations. According to the firm, a group of trusted testers will be using Bard before its public release in the near future. Bard is constructed on Google's pre-existing large language model, LaMDA, which a Google engineer has claimed to have such human-like responses that they thought it was sentient.

The capabilities of Bard are yet to be determined, but it appears to have the same level of versatility as OpenAI's ChatGPT. A screenshot suggests that users can ask Bard practical questions, such as planning a baby shower or creating a lunch menu from a list of ingredients.

The introduction of Bard appears to be a reaction to the highly successful AI chatbot, ChatGPT, developed by startup OpenAI and funded by Microsoft.

In his blog post, Pichai stated, "We have been developing an experimental conversational AI service, powered by LaMDA, named Bard. Today, we are taking a step forward by allowing access to trusted testers before making it accessible to the public in the near future."

It's worth noting that LaMDA is available for public testing through the AI Test Kitchen app, but with a restricted waitlist, only approved users are granted access. With Bard, Google seems to be adopting a more open approach by granting access to a wider user base.

Pichai added that Bard could simplify complicated subjects, like the James Webb Space Telescope, for users. The screenshots shared by Google indicate that Bard can answer in a conversational style, with lengthy paragraphs similar to the current functioning of ChatGPT.

Use of AI in search

Pichai's blog post also indicated that the company plans to incorporate AI features into its Search engine. The blog post mentions that Google will add AI-powered features in Search to present complex information and multiple perspectives in easy-to-comprehend formats, allowing users to quickly grasp the overall picture and learn more from the web, such as exploring different perspectives or giving a deeper perspective into related topics.

The exact timeline for the rollout of these features is yet to be determined. It remains uncertain how this will affect traffic for other websites and blogs if Google's AI feature provides all the detailed answers.
