Global PC shipments decline for the eighth straight quarter; hopes pinned on AI to drive sales

Global personal computer or PC shipments have reported a slight year-on-year decline in Q4 2023, marking the eighth consecutive decline in shipments. The global PC shipments declined by 0.2% year-on-year in Q4 2023.

According to a report by Counterpoint Research, the year-end holiday season failed to boost the shipments in the last quarter of the year. With this, the year 2023 ended with a 14% year-on-year decline in PC shipments. The slowdown in decline in shipments is being seen as a positive and companies expect a recovery in the first half of 2024.

The decline in shipments in 2023 is being attributed to a slowdown in both commercial and consumer segments. Additionally, some of the products launched in the second half of 2023 are expected to start shipping in 2024.

Lenovo continues to lead the market

Lenovo continues to lead the market with 16.1 million devices shipped in Q4 2023, up from 15.5 million devices shipped in Q4 2022, a year-on-year growth of 4%.

The second place was occupied by HP, which shipped 13.9 million devices, up from 13.2 million devices in Q4 2022, registering a 5% growth. Dell on the other hand reported a 9% year-on-year decline. The company shipped 9.9 million devices in Q4 2023, down from 10.9 million devices shipped in Q4 2022.

Apple reported a 2% increase in shipments, shipping 6.3 million devices in Q4 2023, up from 6.2 million devices in Q4 2022. Asus shipped 4.3 million devices in Q4 2023, down from 4.7 million devices shipped in Q4 2022, registering a 9% year-on-year decline.

AI to drive shipments 2024 onwards

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the key considerations, be it smartphone maker like Samsung making it a highlight or PC makers introducing AI-powered features.

AI is expected to play a key role in PC shipments in 2024 and 2025, with both Intel and AMD offering CPUs for next-generation AI PCs, reads the Counter Point report. PC makers are expected to announce new AI-powered PCs in 2024, and a major impact in shipments is expected in the second half of 2024.

“After CES, more AI PC products will be launched by vendors, though we expect the major replacement cycle will be backend-loaded in H2 2024. We expect to see a 50% AI laptop sales share in 2025, with at least an NPU or an AI accelerator (AI engine) equipped in the PC in addition to its major CPU and GPU,” says Counterpoint Research.
