Elon Musk was met with boos from a crowd when he appeared onstage at Dave Chappelle's comedy show on Sunday evening in San Francisco.

"Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world," Chappelle announced, according to tweets from users who said they attended the show, as well as several videos posted from a Twitter account that has since been deleted.

The venue, Chase Center, had said phones and cameras would be locked away in pouches at the show. Though the videos from the deleted account were removed, other Twitter users reposted them.

In the videos, people could be heard cheering and booing when Musk walked on the stage in the 18,000-seat stadium, but the boos got considerably louder as he started waving. One person who said they were at the show estimated that about 80% of the crowd booed.

"Cheers and boos, I see," Chappelle could be heard saying in the videos.

"Weren't expecting this, were you?" Musk said.

"It sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience," Chappelle said, seemingly referring to the layoffs at Twitter that Musk ordered after he took over the company in late October. The billionaire could be heard laughing in response in the videos.

Chappelle defended Musk during his stand-up set, the videos showed, saying that all the people who were booing had "terrible seats" and that Musk's mission was to leave Earth anyway and go to Mars.

Musk thanked Chappelle for having him at the show, and Chappelle said he wouldn't have missed the opportunity.

"The first comedy club on Mars, that should be mine," Chappelle said. "A deal's a deal, Musk."

According to the tweets and videos, Musk said, "Dave, what should I say?"

"Don't say nothing. It'll only spoil the moment," Chappelle said. "Do you hear that sound, Elon? That's the sound of pending civil unrest."

Musk on Monday tweeted that "it was 90% cheers & 10% boos (except during quiet periods)" and that the booing was "a first for me in real life." He added, "It's almost as if I've offended SF's unhinged leftists … but nahhh."

Representatives for Chappelle didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside of normal US operating hours.

The comedian has faced scrutiny since he was accused of making anti-trans comments in his 2021 comedy special "The Closer." Musk has also been criticized for mocking gender pronouns; in a tweet on Sunday, Musk wrote, "My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci."
