Tesla CEO Elon Musk has unfollowed Canadian singer Grimes on Twitter for no obvious reason, prompting tongue-in-cheek breakup speculation.
According to the Twitter account "Big Tech Alert," which tracks the social media activity of major tech industry figures, Musk unfollowed Grimes early on Saturday, prompting a slew of speculation.
Commenting on the following, one Twitter user called Claus Møller wrote "I wonder which one grew to[o] weird for the other."
The current status of the pair's relationship remains unclear. Grimes on Wednesday "pinned" a post with a love song from her new album and a heartbreak emoji on her Twitter account. But she has also recently said she's currently upset about the loss of a close friend.
The South African-born entrepreneur has been dating the Canadian singer since at least May 2018, when they appeared together on the Met Gala red carpet.
In the nearly two years since, Musk and Grimes have appeared relatively steady, and the singer even confirmed earlier this month that she was pregnant with Musk's child.
Their relationship has played out fairly publicly via social media.
The pair met over Twitter after Musk discovered the singer had beaten him to making a dorky AI joke. wanted to make an AI joke about the Rococo Basilisk character in Grimes' "Flesh Without Blood" video - and discovered she had beaten him to it. Since then, she has often tweeted to defend both Musk and Tesla from criticism.
But in August 2018, Musk triggered some drama when he tweeted that he was considering taking Tesla private for $420 a share. This prompted the SEC to formally investigate whether or not the tweet broke US securities law, and the tweet wound up costing Tesla and Musk a combined $40 million in compensation fees.
That summer, the couple unfollowed each other on Instagram, and Musk unfollowed the singer on Twitter, triggering speculation that their relationship was going through a rough patch. He re-followed her in October 2018, and news of her pregnancy followed.
