New Twitter owner Elon Musk polled the site's users on Sunday about whether he should relinquish control of the company.

"Should I step down as head of Twitter?," Musk had tweeted. When the poll closed early the next morning, 17.5 million people had voted – with 57.5% opting for "yes."

But Musk has stayed largely silent about the poll ever since, which is unusual for the prolific tweeter. Instead, Musk had been retweeting and posting about other topics, including illegal immigration, inflation, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Toyota. He's also tweeted about engagement on Twitter during Sunday's World Cup final and retweeted posts about Tesla's solar roofs.

In the more than 24 hours that have elapsed since the poll closed, Musk's response to the results has so far been limited to two tweets, both which simply said "interesting" and were in response to tweets saying bots may have targeted the poll and swayed its results.

Musk had vowed to abide by the results of his poll, a feature on Twitter which he has used to get users' views on various issues around the running of the platform, such as reinstating Trump's account and bringing back the video-sharing app Vine. Musk has used the mantra "vox populi, vox dei," which translates from Latin as "voice of the people, voice of God," to justify some of his controversial actions.

Shortly after posting the poll, Musk tweeted: "As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it."

But some critics fear he won't hasn't follow through on his promise to obey the results of the leadership poll. Earlier this month, Twitter users voted in favor of Musk reinstating accounts he said had "doxxed my exact location in real-time, but accounts including @ElonJet, which published publicly available information on the whereabouts of Musk's private jet, and the personal account of its owner remain suspended.

Twitter did not respond to Insider's request for comment on whether Musk planned to step down.

Musk also said on Monday that he would make a change, allowing only Twitter Blue members – people with an $8 a month subscription – to vote on issues related to policy. It's unclear whether he plans to use this approach to veto the results of Sunday's poll.

Musk has been in charge of Twitter since buying the site in late October and scrapping its board of directors. Since then, he's made sweeping changes to the platform, including changing its content-moderation policies and revamping Twitter Blue. Musk has repeatedly vowed to promote free speech on the platform. But he has also disbanded Twitter's Truth and Safety Council, which worked to prevent harassment on the site, and reinstated some blocked accounts. Some users and activist groups say there has been a rise in hate speech on the platform since Musk took over.

Musk has also laid off and fired thousands of workers, and promoted others to quit, causing a massive shakeup in its leadership. Some former Twitter workers have filed lawsuits against the company, accusing it of failing to give them the severance packages they were promised and of laying off an unfair share of women workers.
