Elon Musk hopes Neuralink test results will soon reveal that a patient controlled a phone with their thoughts

Elon Musk says more information about the first human Neuralink patient is coming this week.

In an interview at the premiere of the upcoming film "Lola," Musk said he was hopeful the company would be able to report by the end of the week that the patient could control a phone and a computer with their thoughts.

In the interview with Fab TV, Musk said: "We hope to have results later this week from the first patient, but so far things look positive."

The unidentified patient was implanted with a product called Telepathy last week, Musk said. He added in a post that the device "enables control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking."

Musk said last week that the patient was "recovering well," with early results showing a "promising neuron spike detection."

Representatives for Neuralink did not immediately respond to a request for comment made by Business Insider outside normal working hours.

While Neuralink's chip has been years in the making, Musk has missed several deadlines for human trials over the last few years. The company's progress was stalled by the FDA initially rejecting Neuralink's request for approval over safety concerns.

Approval was ultimately granted in May 2023, prompting thousands of prospective patients to sign up as volunteers to have a portion of their skull removed and the implant inserted.

Musk has repeatedly claimed the tech could help those who have lost the use of their limbs. He has also claimed the implant could eventually "solve" some conditions, including autism and schizophrenia.

"Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer," Musk said in a post on X. "That is the goal."
