Intel debuted Lunar Lake chips at the Computex show in Taiwan, revealing some major upgrades over last year’s Meteor Lake chips. Intel’s primary focus with this year’s chips is AI, in line with Microsoft’s goal of making this the “Year of AI PCs.”

Set to launch in the third quarter of 2024, these chips are designed with a new architecture tailored specifically for mobile devices, integrating advanced CPU, GPU, and NPU technologies.

Lunar Lake processors will feature on-package memory, similar to Apple's M1, which enhances power efficiency and performance. The architecture can touch 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) in AI workloads thanks to the Neural Processing Unit, or NPU.

This marks a threefold increase in AI capabilities compared to previous generations.

The new architecture is aimed at making Lunar Lake chips more ideal for ultrathin and lightweight laptops.

“AI is driving one of the most consequential eras of innovation the industry has ever seen. The magic of silicon is once again enabling exponential advancements in computing that will push the boundaries of human potential and power the global economy for years to come,” said Pat Gelsinger, chief executive officer, Intel.

Taking On Qualcomm And AMD

Intel's Lunar Lake processors are poised to compete closely with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and AMD's upcoming Strix Point in the AI performance arena.

These advancements align with Intel's strategy to enhance AI computing on personal computers, setting a new benchmark for efficiency and responsiveness in consumer laptops.

In addition to this, Intel underscored its commitment to making Lunar Lake succeed when it comes to AI – it says its partners are working to deliver over 300 AI features for PCs through 2025.
