Clubhouse Android app is coming to India and other countries this week — right in time

After launching its beta Android app on May 9 in the US, the voice-based social media platform Clubhouse is set to roll out the app to Android users worldwide. Facing a dip in the number of downloads on iOS, the company in its town hall on Sunday said that Clubhouse will hit most of the Android devices by May 21.
In a Twitter post, Clubhouse announced that the expansion will begin with Japan, Brazil and Russia on Tuesday with more countries to be added throughout the week. The tweet also specified that Nigeria and India are getting the Android app on Friday morning.
The iOS version of the app has been available since March 2020. In the first year, it grew to 10 million users despite being available on invite-only access, initially. The firm was recently valued at $4 billion after the latest funding round. However, its momentum took a hit lately as per research firm SensorTower. Clubhouse had 2 million downloads in January and then jumped to more than 9.5 million in February. Its downloads dipped in March to 2.7 million and then again in April when they dropped to below a million. The roller coaster growth has been attributed to several reasons but the Android roll-out might help give it a push for now.
Clubhouse is also facing competition from social media giants like Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and others with their own version of Clubhouse clones. For instance, Instagram Live now has an option to turn off the audio and video during live streams, Twitter has launched Spaces which lets users join virtual rooms to have audio conversations in groups. Similarly, Facebook, Linkedin, Spotify are also working on their own versions.
Now is the right time for Clubhouse to expand as the competition is going to get tougher and it has an advantage of its existing user base that gets to have conversations away from the clutter seen on other social media platforms.
