ChatGPT is getting a new feature: memory.
OpenAI said Tuesday that it is testing a feature that will allow ChatGPT to remember things users discuss with the chatbot in future conversations.
The company said that the test would roll out to a small portion of users on ChatGPT’s free and paid "Plus" tier this week, with plans for a wider rollout soon.
The changes should make the chatbot, which amassed 100 million users in two months when it launched in 2022, more conversational.
OpenAI shared several examples of how ChatGPT’s "memory" might work in practice, from remembering how users prefer to format meeting notes to incorporating contextual information into its responses.
Users will be able to turn the new "memory" features off and delete specific "memories" or tell ChatGPT directly to forget certain bits of information.
OpenAI said that it was taking steps to ensure ChatGPT won’t automatically log what it calls "sensitive information," such as information about your health.
However, like everything users feed into the chatbot, the company said it may use your memories to train future versions of the AI model — so be careful what you type into it.
This is the latest tweak OpenAI has made to ChatGPT in recent weeks.
The startup also rolled out a fix for an issue that saw users complain the AI had been refusing to complete some tasks, with CEO Sam Altman posting on X that ChatGPT should be “much less lazy now.”
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.
