Analyst suggests Apple’s upcoming mixed-reality headset will feature an M1-equivalent processor

• Apple’s AR/VR headset is set to launch in Q4, 2022.
• The mixed-reality headset will feature two processors, with the main chip having similar computing power as that in an M1-chip.
• The device will be able to work independently of an iPhone or Mac.

Apple’s long-awaited AR/VR headset is set for launch late next year and will feature high computing powers, matching that of an M1-chip. According to a report in MacRumors, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in his investor note has shed light on what the mixed-reality headset will feature and what we can expect from it.

Kuo claims that the device will feature two processors to support its range of capabilities. Among the processors, the high-end main chip will be similar to Apple’s M1 chip, which was introduced last year in MacBook Air, in terms of computing power. While the lower-end processor will manage sensor-related functionalities.

AR/VR experience

Kuo claims that the first iteration which will primarily offer AR experiences can work independently without the need of tethering to an iPhone or Mac. Apple is looking at the headsets as a potential device that can replace the iPhone in 10 years' time, and adds a comprehensive range of applications with it.

Apart from augmented reality, the headset will also be able to handle virtual reality experiences as it features a pair of 4K Micro OLED displays from Sony that require the high computing power similar to that found in an M1 chip, and much higher than an iPhone.

Last week, Kuo had said that the upcoming headset and the iPhone 14 will support Wi-Fi 6E technology, which can offer increased bandwidth and lower interference that is needed for AR and VR experiences.

Weight and Price

Previously, rumours on its weight and price have been doing rounds. These mixed-reality headsets are expected to be lightweight, weighing around 200-300g as it will feature cloth exteriors. As for the pricing, the rumours provide various ranges, starting from $1000 up to $3000.

While most of the features discussed here are based on Kuo’s report, the wait is likely to be over next year. In terms of specifications and pricing, we will keep hearing more until the official announcement from the company.
