A photo-editing AI thought this blurry photo was actor Ryan Gosling's face

• A photo-editing software appeared to turn part of a picture of a cityscape into Ryan Gosling's face.
• The software, Gigapixel AI, uses artificial intelligence to correct images. The photographer, Jomppe Vaarakallio, told PetaPixel that it interpreted a blurry spot in the image as Gosling and automatically added in the actor's face.
• The photo of Ryan Gosling went away after he turned off the AI's "detect faces" feature.

While processing an image, a piece of artificial intelligence software thought it spotted Ryan Gosling in a blurry part of the photo — so it added in the actor's face.

The software, Gigapixel AI by Topaz Labs, allows users to enlarge photos while maintaining picture clarity. As PetaPixel reports, the photographer and retoucher Jomppe Vaarakallio was using it when he noticed the software turned a fuzzy patch in the image into a somewhat distorted face of the actor.

Varrakallio told the blog that Gosling's face disappeared when he turned off Gigapixel AI's "detect faces" feature.

AI technology has allowed machines to learn from data and then carry out human-like tasks. It has been applied across various fields, including the medical arena, but the tech still has too many pitfalls for it to be applied for mass use — like, for example, thinking the face of an actor is hiding in an image when it's not.
