AI is 2023's word of the year

The Collins Dictionary has unveiled "AI" as its 2023 word of the year.

The UK-based publisher said AI was chosen because it "has accelerated at such a fast pace and become the dominant conversation of 2023," per The Guardian.

Other words which were shortlisted for the annual top spot included "Nepo baby" and "Semaglutide."

Since the launch of ChatGPT last November, discussions about the technology have become more mainstream, as people question whether AI could destroy humanity, or unlock new possibilities.

Alex Beecroft, the Collins managing director, said there was "no question" that AI has been "the talking point of 2023," per The Guardian.

"We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology," he added.

The publisher also noted that use of the term "AI" has increased four-fold this year.

Wednesday's announcement also coincides with the start of the AI Safety Summit in the UK, where Elon Musk, Kamala Harris, and around 100 other tech and government leaders are discussing the future of the technology.

Michelle Donelan, the British minister who's hosting the first day of the summit, said the rise of AI means "we stand at a pivotal juncture in human history."

And on Wednesday, she announced that another AI Safety Summit will take place in South Korea in six months, before another in France, per Reuters.
