  • Smartphone makers have come forward to provide relief to their customers by extending warranties of their devices.
  • This comes at a time when several states in the country have imposed lockdowns.
  • However, some major companies are missing from this list this year, although they had extended warranties in 2020.

Smartphone makers Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Poco have announced warranty extensions by up to two months as several states in India have enforced lockdowns to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The warranty extensions should help customers in coping with issues faced due to lockdowns, which could lead to stores being closed and movement for non-essential work being restricted.

So, if you have a Xiaomi smartphone and your warranty is expiring in May or June this year, you get an extension of 2 months. The same applies to Poco smartphones as well.

However, Oppo and Vivo were not as generous. Oppo has announced a warranty extension till June 30 for those whose warranties are expiring during the lockdown. In addition to this, Oppo has also set up a dedicated helpline number to help customers get the real-time status of operations of its service centres.

Oppo customers can contact the helpline on WhatsApp at +919871502777 to get the status of service centres. The company says it has implemented a chatbot to address most of the concerns of its customers.

Vivo, on the other hand, is extending the warranty by only 30 days. Moreover, the extension is only applicable in places where a lockdown has been imposed. However, Vivo has announced a pick-and-drop service for devices to make things slightly easier for its customers. This service can be availed for free.

Many companies had extended warranties in 2020 as well

In 2020, several companies announced warranty extensions – some for as much as 90 days – during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The list included all major smartphone makers – Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus among others. Several names from this list are missing this year, but it’s still likely that more companies might come forward and offer some relief to their customers.
