Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has confirmed that it has partnered with German camera-giant Leica, becoming the latest smartphone company to partner with it after Huawei and Sharp.

In addition to announcing the partnership, the company has also confirmed that its first smartphone with Leica cameras will be launched in July 2022. This could be the much-awaited Xiaomi 12 Ultra that has been rumored for some time now.

“This cooperation will provide a strong boost to Xiaomi's imaging strategy. During the cooperation, from optical design to tuning aesthetic orientations, the innovative technologies, product philosophies and imaging preferences of both parties have experienced unprecedented in-depth collision and fusion." Lei Jun, chief executive officer of Xiaomi Group said.

According to Xiaomi, the partnership will include cooperation in optical design, aesthetic orientations and imaging preferences.

Xiaomi isn’t the first Chinese smartphone maker to team up with camera brands. OnePlus has a partnership with Hasselblad and Vivo has partnered with ZEISS. While Xiaomi’s flagship devices are feature packed, cameras have always been one of the shortcomings.

The Xiaomi 12 Ultra is expected to launch in July. While not much is known about the device, it is expected to be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chipset.

"It is an honor to announce the long-term strategic cooperation with Xiaomi today. Leica and Xiaomi are both global premium brands and during this unprecedented deep cooperation process, both parties have successively worked on the goal of providing customers a new era of mobile photography,” said Matthias Harsch, chief executive officer of Leica Group.
