Apple enthusiasts each year wait for the launch of the next iteration of the iPhone as it makes several changes to its flagship device each year. The year 2023 is no different, as it is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 series in September 2023.

The iPhone 15 series is expected to come with several new features and a revamped line-up. The Cupertino-based giant is expected to ditch the Pro Max model for a new top-end device, which will reportedly be the costliest smartphone from the company.

Upcoming new iPhone in 2023

iPhone 15 line-up may get a new variant

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 series, consisting of four devices. The devices include the vanilla iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Ultra. The “Pro Max” moniker is expected to be replaced by “Ultra”.

The iPhone 15 Ultra is expected to be the company’s most expensive smartphone and may be priced up to $200 higher than the iPhone 14 Pro Max which means it could be priced as high as $1,200.

iPhones may finally ship with a Type-C port

Apple is expected to finally ship its iPhones with a Type-C port in 2023. The primary reason for this is the European Union’s new regulation that mandates all smartphones to be equipped with a Type-C port. While the regulations will come into effect from 2024, Apple is expected to use the Type-C port for the iPhone 15 series.

Revamped design

Apple is expected to overhaul the design of its upcoming iPhone 15 series, moving from the existing squared-off design to a rounded design. Apple had last used a rounded design for the iPhone 5C.

The company is also expected to use a titanium chassis for the iPhone 15 series, which is expected to make the device more durable as titanium is more resistant to scratches compared to stainless steel.

Solid-state buttons

Another significant change to the iPhone line-up will be the use of solid-state buttons. The iPhone 15 series will reportedly ditch physical buttons, offering users solid-state buttons. This was revealed after Apple Supplier Cirrus Logic, in an earnings call, which said, the “largest change in new iPhone models next year is the removal of the buttons, which would require additional drivers for the haptics engine.”

Apple however has not revealed anything about the use of solid-state buttons yet.

Periscope camera

Apple has something in store for photography enthusiasts as the company is expected to use periscope telephoto lens technology for the upcoming iPhone 15 series. This is expected to be limited to the top-end Pro and Ultra models.

The periscope lens will allow the device to offer 5x or 10x optical zoom capabilities, which is significantly higher than the existing telephoto lens in the iPhone 14 series which offers 3x optical zoom.

New A-series chipset

Apple is expected to use a new A17 chipset built on TSMC’s next-generation 3-nanometer node, which is expected to give the device a boost of up to 15% compared to its predecessor, while reducing the battery consumption by up to 30%.
