Mobile gaming has taken off in India thanks to an explosion in the availability of capable smartphones and decent mobile internet speeds.
The Indian gaming industry is reportedly valued at $890 million. But it is widely believed to have hit the billion dollar mark thanks to its double digit growth rate. This should not come as a surprise though – India has over 450 million smartphone users, so there is enough audience that can be targeted by game developers across categories.
At the moment, though, it looks like Battle Royale games are amongst the most popular games in India. Titles like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile and more are highly popular, with the monthly active users’ figure crossing 100 million.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
PUBG Mobile has taken India and the world by storm. According to data from Sensor Tower, a company that tracks mobile app stores, PUBG Mobile raked in revenue of $496 million in 2019, recording a whopping 652% growth rate year-on-year.
Tencent, the game’s developer, also organizes tournaments on a regular basis, which helps in spreading the game’s popularity.
Call of Duty: Mobile
Call of Duty: Mobile was launched earlier this year, and in no time, it has managed to climb up the popularity charts. It recorded over 100 million downloads in the first week of its launch, with over 13 million downloads coming from India, which is second after the US.
Clash of Clans
Developed by Supercell, Clash of Clans has raked in over $2.5 billion in revenue so far. Clash of Clans is a free-to-play game, although there are plenty of in-app purchases in case you don’t want to grind it out.
