Qualcomm is working on its next-generation chipset, the Snapdragon 895, and reports suggest that it could offer major upgrades to take on Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chipset with AMD RDNA graphics. This suggests that two of the top mobile chip makers are aiming at mobile gamers, which is still a growing market.

According to a post by Lenovo China’s phone business manager Chen Jin on Weibo, the Snapdragon 895 chipset will have a “greatly upgraded GPU”. He revealed this information while teasing the Legion 3 Pro, the company’s upcoming flagship gaming smartphone.

The Snapdragon 895 chipset, codenamed SM8450, is expected to launch at Qualcomm’s annual event in Hawaii towards the end of the year.

According to leaks so far, Qualcomm is expected to build the Snapdragon 895 chipset and its X65 5G modem on a 4nm fabrication process, which seems like a minor bump from the Snapdragon 888 that is built on a 5nm process. Phones with the Snapdragon 895 chipset will be able to connect to 5G networks on mmWave or sub-5GHz frequencies.

Beyond this, it is difficult to speculate what exactly the Snapdragon 895 chipset will have in store for us. But right now, it does seem that Qualcomm is stepping up its game to compete with the Samsung-AMD partnership for the Exynos 2200 chipset.

AMD RDNA graphics could be a gamechanger

The Exynos 2200 chipset has reportedly beat the Apple A14 Bionic chipset in some benchmarks. Notably, in one of the benchmarks called Manhattan 3.0 1080p, the Exynos 2200 chipset recorded 170.7 frames per second, which is significantly higher than the 120 frames per second recorded on the A14 Bionic and Snapdragon 888 chipsets.

We should start seeing smartphones with the Snapdragon 895 and Exynos 2200 chipsets in 2022. While most Android original equipment manufacturers (OEM) – say, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo et al – will likely use the Snapdragon 895 chipset in their flagships, Samsung could use both the Snapdragon 895 and Exynos 2200 chipsets, depending on the market. For instance, Samsung uses the Snapdragon 888 chipset in the Galaxy S21 Ultra in certain markets like the US, while other markets get the Exynos 2100 variant.

If the Exynos 2200 trumps the Snapdragon 895 chipset in terms of graphics, it could be a major coup for AMD which has blazed past Intel with its recent Ryzen-branded processors for desktop computers.
