Smartphone cameras have been jumping leaps with higher megapixel counts and better image processing software. Samsung has taken things up a notch with its latest ISOCELL HP1 200-megapixel sensor. Samsung also introduced the ISOCELL GN5 sensor that is said to boost autofocusing capabilities.

The ISOCELL PH1 sensor features ‘ChameleonCell’ technology which is pixel binning for better low-light photography. Pixel binning combines multiple pixels to create one large superpixel. This helps in reducing noise in photos for clearer and brighter images. So you’re getting a photo with a low resolution but with higher image quality. Samsung’s ISOCELL GN5 200-megapixel sensor uses the 12.5-megapixel sensor to capture photos in low-light conditions by merging 16 adjacent pixels.

In well-lit conditions, the 200-megapixel sensor is used to capture photos. The ISOCELL HP1 sensor is also capable of taking 8K videos at 30 frames per second (fps). Here too it uses pixel binning to combine four adjacent pixels bringing down the resolution to 50-megapixel for 8K videos.

Samsung’s next flagship smartphone would be the Galaxy S22 series where the 200-megapixel sensor would ideally debut. But some rumours suggest that the Galaxy S22 Ultra could continue with the 108-megapixel camera that the Galaxy S21 Ultra has. There are also speculations that Xiaomi will debut the first smartphone with Samsung’s 200-megapixel sensor.

The ISOCELL GN5 sensor uses Dual Pixel Pro technology for all-directional autofocusing. It also has Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) technology that enables the sensor to absorb more light while decreasing crosstalk within the pixel, Samsung said in a release.

Both the ISOCELL PH1 and GN5 sensors are available for smartphone manufacturers. Samsung is yet to reveal which smartphones will feature these sensors first.
