Design and display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 at first look. However, the device comes with some changes.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is sleeker when compared to the Z Fold 5. It measures 12.1 mm when folded, down from the Z Fold 5’s 13.4 mm. It is just 5.6 mm when unfolded. It’s not just the size, the weight has also been brought down. The device now weighs 239 grams, down from 253 grams.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 now folds better than its predecessor. What this means is that there is no gap between the two halves when the device is folded.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 comes with a glass back with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. It features a triple camera setup at the back with a single cutout that houses the three cameras.

The only branding you can see on the device is on the hinge. It comes with an Enhanced Armor Aluminum frame that is highly durable and gives a premium feel while holding.

The placement of buttons has not changed. The right side features the volume rockers and the power button, which comes with an integrated fingerprint sensor.

The left side features the SIM tray and the antenna lines.

On top, you get the speaker grille and three microphones.

At the bottom, you get the USB Type-C port, a speaker grille and a microphone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is rated IP48 for water and dust resistance, an upgrade over its predecessor’s IPX8 rating. However, I wouldn’t recommend using the device in the rain or underwater.

Coming to the display, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 features a large 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate on the inside. This display is equipped with Samsung Ultra Thin Glass protection.

On the outside, the smartphone features a 6.3-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 was offered with a 6.2-inch display.

Samsung has always been good with displays and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is no exception. While the cover display feels smaller initially, you get used to it and it is a treat for fans of compact smartphones.

Software and performance

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 runs on Android 14 with OneUI 6.1.1 on top. The device will get seven years of Android updates and security updates, which is excellent.

Samsung’s OneUI is among the best, especially if you consider the company’s flagship smartphones. However, not much has changed since the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Samsung continues to offer its pop-up windows and split-screen mode on its new foldable smartphone, which allows you to easily use multiple applications, especially when using the larger inner display.

The device also comes with S Pen support, which is not included in the device and needs to be purchased separately.

Coming to performance, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset, which is currently the most powerful chipset available for Android devices. This is the customised variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which has been specifically designed for Samsung devices and runs at 3.39GHz.

The device comes with 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB UFS 4.0 storage.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is excellent at multi-tasking, gaming and streaming. It is able to easily handle everything you throw at it. The Galaxy Z 6 Fold is more powerful than any other foldable in the market.

I played games like Call of Duty: Mobile and Asphalt 9 on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the device was able to easily handle them at max settings without any issues. The device did not heat up, even during extended gaming sessions, thanks to the new larger vapour chamber offered with the device.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is powered by a 4,400mAh battery with 25W wired charging support and 15W wireless charging support. Samsung has not made any changes in the battery department when compared to the device’s predecessor. A bigger battery and faster charging would have been good to have.

Camera

Coming to the camera department, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 features a triple camera setup at the back, consisting of a 50MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture and OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and a 10MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, OIS, 3x optical zoom and 30x space zoom. Samsung has retained the same camera setup for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 as the device’s predecessor.

Not much has changed in the camera department when compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 captures good images with its rear camera setup. The device is able to capture good images with minimal noise and good colour reproduction and details in daylight conditions. It is equipped with OIS, you don’t have to worry about blurry images.

The portrait images captured with the device come out great, with good edge detection and details.

The telephoto lens on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom, which the company calls Space Zoom.

The images captured in low-light conditions turned out decent, with some noise and change in colour.

It comes with two selfie cameras – a 10MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture on the cover display and a 4MP under-display selfie camera with f/1.8 aperture on the internal display. While the 10MP camera is able to capture decent selfies, the 4MP unit is just enough for a video call.

You can also use the rear camera setup to capture selfies by opening the display and using the outer display. This was my preferred way to take selfies during my usage.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers decent improvements over its predecessor, the primary being an improved hinge and reduction in weight. It offers a complete foldable experience, thanks to the company’s refined user interface. The device ticks all the boxes, including a premium design, excellent display, good sound and good cameras. It does struggle a bit when it comes to battery and charging speeds. If you do not mind the slow charging, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is an excellent option, that offers one of the best foldable experiences in the market.

If you already have the Galaxy Z Fold 5, buying the Galaxy Z Fold 6 might not make sense, unless you want a lighter phone and are willing to spend for it.

Other foldables to consider in India include the OnePlus Open and the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
