Samsung recently announced a new mid-range device in its Galaxy M series, dubbed as the Galaxy M53 5G. It is the successor of the Galaxy M52 5G and offers an improved design over its predecessor.

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is placed in the highly competitive ₹30,000 segment and takes on popular devices from companies like OnePlus, Xiaomi and Realme that offer similar features.

The main highlights of the Galaxy M53 5G include the Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, the 108MP primary camera and the 5,000mAh battery. The device also comes with 5G support, making it future proof as far as connectivity is concerned.

I’ve been using the Galaxy M53 5G for a couple of weeks now and here’s my full review of the latest mid-range smartphone from Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G – Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is priced at ₹26,499 for the 6GB + 128GB variant and ₹28,499 for the 8GB + 128GB variant. It comes in Deep Ocean Blue and Mystique colour options and is available from Amazon India, Samsung Online store and Samsung authorized retailers across the country.

In this price segment, the device competes with the likes of the Nord CE 2 5G, Xiaomi 11i 5G and the Realme GT Master Edition.

Thin phone, glossy design

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G features a similar design as other Galaxy M series phones. It comes with a plastic back with a glossy finish. The device is thin and weighs 176 grams.

On the front, the device comes with an AMOLED display with a punch-hole notch in the middle for the selfie camera. The device features thin bezels on the sides.

At the back, the device features a square camera module that houses the quad camera setup. There is an LED flash below the camera module and the Samsung logo is placed at the bottom.

The device comes with volume rockers and the power button on the right side. The power button doubles up as a fingerprint sensor. The SIM tray has been placed on the left side of the device.

The device sports a USB Type-C port, a microphone and a speaker grille at the bottom.

Vivid display with punchy colours

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G features a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The device features a punch-hole notch for the selfie camera.

The Super AMOLED display is vivid and offers excellent colour reproduction and brightness. Like with most other smartphones these days, you can finetune the colour profiles of the Galaxy M53 to your liking, choosing between natural and punchy options, among others.

The bezels are fairly thin, tooRounak Jain

Thanks to the Super AMOLED tech, the Galaxy M53’s display offers true blacks. It’s also one of the very few smartphones in this price range to offer a Super AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate.

Breezy performance, day-long battery life

Powering the Galaxy M53 5G is the Mediatek Dimensity 900 chipset, making it one of the few Samsung smartphones without a Snapdragon or Exynos chipset. This is paired with up to 8GB of memory and 128GB storage.

In the real world, the Galaxy M53 5G was a breeze in most cases, with nary a stutter. Even in games, the M53 performed surprisingly well while playing graphics intensive titles like Call of Duty: Mobile, with support for both high and medium graphics. However, ‘very high’ frame rates are supported only with the ‘medium’ graphics option.

Side profileRounak Jain

A 5,000mAh battery powers the Galaxy M53 5G. With moderate usage, the phone lasted me an entire day with some browsing, gaming for 30-45 minutes, streaming a few videos and some calls. Your mileage may vary, though.

The Galaxy M53 5G doesn’t come with a charger in the box, just like its pricier A-series sibling, the Galaxy A53 5G. It does support 25W fast charging, however.

Serviceable cameras

The Galaxy M53 5G sports a quad camera setup on the back, with a 108MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide angle snapper, a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth camera. On the front, it has a 32MP camera for selfies and video calling.

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy M53 manages to capture decent photos in daylight conditions with adequate detail and slight oversaturation.

The phone does take a while to capture photos in lowlight and artificial light conditions, although the end results are decent. It does slow down a bit while capturing portrait photos, though.

Overall, the Galaxy M53 5G fares alright in decent lighting conditions, making it a serviceable option for most users.

Conclusion

The Galaxy M53 5G is a very good mid-range phone, especially if you want a Samsung smartphone in the sub-₹30,000 price segment.

It comes with a big, bright display, a big battery and smooth performance. The cameras are decent, as is the design, so there’s little to complain about, all things considered.

Its competitors include the Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge that offers a similar feature sheet, but with nearly 6x faster charging thanks to 120W fast charging support. Other notable options include the Realme 9 Pro+ and the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G.
