Motorola Edge 50 Pro review – a feature-packed smartphone with good design

Motorola recently launched its latest mid-range offering, the Edge 50 Pro in its Edge series in India. It is the successor of the Motorola Edge 40 Pro that was launched in 2023.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro has received several updates over its predecessor, including a revamped design, new UI, improved battery and more. The main highlights of the Edge 50 Pro include its vegan leather design, 144Hz display and fast charging.

I have been using the Motorola Edge 50 Pro for a few weeks now, and here is my detailed review of the latest mid-range offering from the company.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro price and availability

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro has been priced at ₹31,999 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant and ₹35,999 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB internal storage variant.

The device is available from Flipkart, Motorola Online Store and the company’s authorised retail stores in Luxe Lavender, Moonlight Pearl and Black Beauty colour options.

Design and display

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro comes with a sleek and lightweight design. It is available in three colour options – in Luxe Lavender, Moonlight Pearl and Black Beauty. While the in Luxe Lavender and Black Beauty both offer vegan leather at the back, the Moonlight Pearl variant comes with a pearl acetate back.

I tested the Luxe Lavender variant, which is purple in colour and comes with a vegan leather back, which sets it apart from other devices in the segment. The vegan leather gives a premium feel while holding the device and prevents fingerprint smudges.

The device comes with a rectangular camera module at the back with three large camera cut-outs and an LED flash. The smartphone also features the Motorola logo at the back in the middle with a glossy finish.

On the right side, you get the volume rockers and the power button. The left side of the smartphone is bare, apart from some antenna lines.

On the top, you get Dolby Atmos branding and a microphone.

At the bottom, you get the SIM tray, a microphone, a USB Type-C port, and the speaker grille.

Coming to the display, the smartphone comes with a 10-bit 6.7-inch 1.5K curved pOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and up to 2000 nits brightness. The device comes with HDR10+ support and offers

It is the first smartphone to be Pantone validated for colour accuracy. To make use of this, you need to change to the natural mode. During my testing, the natural mode worked well.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and features an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The high refresh rate and colour accuracy make it a great option for those looking to play games or consume content. The high brightness ensures that you do not have to worry about using the device in direct sunlight.

Software and performance

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro runs on Android 14 out of the box with the company’s new Hello UI on top. The smartphone will get three years of Android updates and five years of security updates. The company’s UI offers a clutter-free user experience is free of bloatware and intrusive advertisements.

The device is equipped mostly with Google and Motorola apps. It also comes with Style sync, an AI-powered feature that allows you to use captured photos or photos in your gallery to create wallpapers.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset and comes with up to 12GB LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB UFS 2.2 storage. While it is a decent chipset, the company could have offered a more powerful chipset, in line with other smartphones in the segment.

The device offers a good gaming experience, even with Full HD graphics. I tried popular titles such as Battlegrounds Mobile India and Call of Duty: Mobile on the smartphone.

The smartphone is powered by a 4,500mAh battery with 125W fast charging support and 50W wireless charging support. At a time when a lot of devices more expensive than the Edge 50 Pro do not offer wireless charging, it is good to see 50W wireless charging on the device. While the 12GB variant comes with a 125W charger in the box, the base variant only offers a 68W charger in the box, which might be a letdown for many.

Camera

Coming to the camera department, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is equipped with a triple camera setup at the back consisting of a 50MP primary camera with OIS, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom. The device comes with several AI-powered features for the cameras, including AI adaptive stabilisation and AI photo enhancement.

The smartphone’s cameras performs well in daylight conditions, capturing images with good colour reproduction and accurate details.

The device does a good job when it comes to portrait images. The portrait images captured on the device come with good edge detection and details.

Coming to low light conditions, the device is able to capture decent images with minimal noise.

On the front, the device comes with a 50MP selfie camera that offers features such as AI adaptive stabilisation, AI photo enhancement and autofocus tracking.

Verdict

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is a good device that ticks a lot of right boxes, including a premium design, good display, decent cameras and fast charging support. It does miss out on a more powerful chipset and comes with a slightly smaller battery.

If you are looking for a smartphone with a good design and a clean user interface, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is a good option. However, if you are looking for a more powerful smartphone, the Oppo Reno 11 Pro is worth considering, but it misses out on a vegan leather back and does not offer wireless charging.
