The MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset has been launched in India today, promising to offer flagship-grade performance and next-gen connectivity thanks to 5G support.

“The (Dimensity 1200) chipset will mark a new beginning for the smartphone segment in India with its flagship features that blend the best of all worlds – be it processor technology, camera, AI features, gaming or connectivity enhancements,” said Anku Jain, managing director, MediaTek India.

MediaTek had unveiled the Dimensity 1200 chipset globally back in January this year alongside the Dimensity 1100.

In addition to revealing details about the chipset, it has also been confirmed that Realme will launch the first Dimensity 1200-powered phone in India. Realme India’s chief executive officer Madhav Sheth took the stage to announce this but stopped short of revealing any further details about the phone.

It is likely that this could be the Realme GT Neo, but not much is known about this rumoured phone yet.

MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset – specifications and performance upgrades

MediaTek claims that the Dimensity 1200 chipset delivers up to 22% faster CPU (central processing unit) performance than its predecessor. Simultaneously, the company says it is 25% more efficient.

The Dimensity 1200 chipset is aimed at taking on the Snapdragon 888, which is Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset. It is built on the 6nm fabrication process while the Snapdragon 888 is built on a 5nm LPE (Low Power Early) process.

This octa-core chipset comprises eight cores – 1x Cortex A78 core with 3GHz clock speed, three more Cortex A78 cores with top clock speed of 2.6GHz, and four efficiency Cortex A55 cores with top clock speed of 2GHz.

The Dimensity 1200 chipset is capable of handling Full HD+ resolution displays with a maximum refresh rate of 168GHz, which could benefit gaming smartphones in case they have higher refresh rate displays – like the ROG Phone 5 which has a 144Hz refresh rate display.

In terms of 5G connectivity, the Dimensity 1200 supports a wide range of features like 5G carrier aggregation for enhanced speeds, true dual SIM 5G for seamless connectivity between multiple SIMs, and Voice over New Radio (VoNR), which promises significantly lower latency and improved call and picture quality.

It also supports Wi-Fi 6 and has dual transmitters and receivers for better upload and download performance. MediaTek has included Bluetooth 5.2 Low Energy support as well, reducing power consumption and latency by up to 20%.

MediaTek says that this chipset can handle a maximum image resolution of 200MP – also far beyond the current maximum capabilities. It also supports 4K video recording, and up to 40% better dynamic range during high dynamic range (HDR) recording.
