Indian government wants Apple and Samsung to quickly roll out the update to enable 5G support

• All of Apple’s 5G smartphones and several Samsung devices are yet to receive an update.

India announced the launch of 5G services in the country on October 1, and ten days later, several users are still unable to use 5G despite having a 5G smartphone. This is because a small software update is needed from the smartphone makers to enable 5G.

While a few smartphone makers have already started rolling out an update to enable 5G, the government wants smartphone makers to prioritise the rollout of updates to enable 5G.

According to a report by Reuters, the Indian government has called a meeting of major smartphone makers and India’s telcos to push them for a speedy rollout of updates.

The government has reportedly called major smartphone makers such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Vivo for the meeting. The government has also called India’s telecom companies such as Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

The meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, will include talks "to prioritise" and release a software update to enable 5G.

If we view Airtel’s list of 5G-ready devices, all of Apple’s and several of Samsung’s devices show that the device has yet to receive the software update. Most smartphones from other companies show that they are 5G ready.

Apple’s recently launched iPhone 14 has yet to receive an update for 5G.

"Apple has been taking a lot of time. Airtel has been concerned about this as many of their premium clients are on Apple devices," said an industry source familiar with the matter to Reuters. Apple is reportedly testing and validating 5G offering on its devices in the country.
