Global smartphone shipments grow 6.5% in Q2 2024, Xiaomi records highest growth

Worldwide smartphone shipments continued to grow in Q2 2024, marking the fourth consecutive quarter to record an increase in smartphone shipments. While the top companies have reported growth, the competition has also increased.

According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), 285.4 million smartphones were shipped across the world in Q2 2024, marking a 6.5% year-on-year increase.

"While recovery is well under way with the top 5 companies all making year-over-year gains, we are seeing increasing competition amongst the leaders and a polarisation of price bands,” said Nabila Popal, research director, IDC Worldwide Tracker team.

Samsung continues to lead the global smartphone market with 53.9 million devices shipped in Q2 2024, up from 53.5% of devices shipped in Q2 2023, recording a 0.7% increase in shipments.

Apple on the other hand shipped 45.2 million devices in Q2 2024, up from 44.5 million devices shipped in Q2 2024, registering a 1.5% growth.

Xiaomi records the highest growth

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi recorded the highest growth in Q2 2024, shipping 42.3 million devices, up from 33.2 million devices shipped in Q2 2023, registering a 27.4% year-on-year growth.

Vivo also recorded excellent year-on-year growth at 21.9%. The company shipped 25.9 million devices in Q2 2024, up from 21.3 million devices in Q2 2023.

Oppo, which is in the fifth position shipped 25.8 million devices in Q2 2024, up from 25.4 million devices shipped in Q2 2023, recording a 1.8% growth in shipments.

Samsung continues to lead the market with an 18.9% market share in Q2 2024, followed by Apple with a 15.8% market share and Xiaomi is a close third with a 14.8% market share.

“The second quarter is more like a prelude before more Gen AI smartphones are launched in the second half of the year, which will potentially be the next growth driver after 5G and foldables,” said Will Wong, senior research manager for Client Devices, IDC.
