If you've gotten a new Android phone recently, you'll need to set up your voicemail relatively quickly so that people trying to contact you can leave messages. Or, if you just want to change your voicemail message to something different, you can do that, too.

How to set up voicemail on Android

The actual method of setting up your voicemail varies between cell phone manufacturers and providers, but the major players (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, etc.) all follow the same general steps.

1. Some mobile phones have a Voicemail app easily accessible from the get-go. To start the voicemail setup process, just tap on the Voicemail app and follow the on-screen prompts. You may need to tap the Menu icon to go into settings.

2. If you don't have a Voicemail app on your phone, or you aren't sure how to find it, you can still set up your voicemail using the Phone app. Tap on the Phone app to open it. If the numeric keypad doesn't appear right away, tap "Keypad" on the bottom of your screen.

3. There are a few different ways to access your voicemail setup from your phone's keypad, and they might vary depending on your provider. One option involves pressing and holding 1 on the keypad. Another involves dialing *86 on the keypad. If neither of those work, you can try dialing the phone number associated with your new phone.

4. If you're asked for a password, type in your password using the keypad. If you haven't created a password before, type your phone number's last four digits.

5. Your voicemail will walk you through the setup process, including recording your personal greeting (the message that plays when you receive a call that goes to voicemail) and possibly your voice signature (your name, spoken by you into the recording).

6. To listen to the recording, hit Play. If you mess up and want to try again, hit Redo. Save when you're done.

7. Once your voicemail announces that setup is complete, you can hang up the call.
