Siri might be a trusty virtual assistant designed to respond to your voice, but it won't do very much until you've set it up. Once enabled, Siri will answer questions, respond to commands, help you control your phone hands-free, and even tell you jokes. If you're ready to get started, here's how to set up Siri on your iPhone on iPad.

How to set up Siri on an iPhone or iPad

You'll need to perform this setup on each device you own. If you have both an iPhone and an iPad, for example, you should repeat this process on both devices.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, start the Settings app and tap Siri & Search.

2. Turn on Listen for "Hey Siri" by swiping the button to the right.

3. In the pop-up window, tap Enable Siri, which will launch the Set Up "Hey Siri" window.

4. Tap Continue.

5. Follow the instructions by saying each phrase. This won't take long; there are only five phrases, and these help calibrate Siri by helping it to better understand your voice.

6. When you've said all five phrases, tap Done.

7. If necessary, turn on both Press Side Button for Siri and Allow Siri When Locked by swiping the buttons to the right.

If you ever want to disable Siri, turn off both Listen for "Hey Siri" and Press Side Button for Siri. If you turn Siri back on again, you'll need to repeat the voice training steps, because your device won't retain that information if Siri is disabled.
