How to change your Yahoo account password or reset it if you've forgotten it

  • You can change your Yahoo password by accessing your account settings on a computer or the Yahoo mobile app.
  • If you can't log in because you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Forgot password" link found on the sign-in page to reset your password.

Even if you have a strong password protecting your Yahoo account, you may occasionally need to change it.

In addition to regular password maintenance, you should know how to change your password in case you learn the account has been hacked, there has been a data breach, or it has been otherwise compromised.

Luckily, it just takes a few clicks to change your Yahoo password. Here's how.

How to change your Yahoo password from a computer

If you know your existing Yahoo password and need to change it, you can use the link found in your account settings.

1. Open Yahoo in a web browser and then click your account avatar at the top right of the web page.

2. In the drop-down menu, click "Settings." If you are directed to the Yahoo Mail page, choose "Account info" instead.

3. In the pane on the left, click "Account Security."

4. Click "Change password."

5. Enter the new password you want to use and enter it a second time in the "Confirm new password" field. Check "Show password" if you find it easier to see what you're typing.

6. Click "Continue" to save your new password.

How to change your Yahoo password from the mobile app

You can also change your Yahoo password from the mobile app.

1. In the Yahoo app on your phone or tablet, tap your account avatar at the top left of the screen, above the Inbox.

2. Tap "Settings."

3. In the Settings menu, tap "Manage accounts."

4. On the Manage Accounts page, find your account and then tap "Account info."

5. Tap "Security Settings." You may need to enter the password or use your device's biometric security.

6. On the Account Security page, tap "Change password."

7. Finally, enter your new password and confirm it by entering it a second time.

8. Tap "Continue." Your new password is saved.

How to reset your Yahoo password

If you've lost or forgotten your Yahoo password, you can reset it to regain access to your account.

1. Open Yahoo in a web browser and click "Sign in."

2. Enter your username or email address and click "Next."

3. Click "Forgot password?"

4. Yahoo will offer to send you a password reset link. Your options depend upon what contact options you've configured in your Yahoo account settings. Typically, you can choose to get a text message or an email sent to a backup email address. Choose the option that works best for you.

5. When you get the reset link, follow it and then enter the new password you want to use with your Yahoo account.

Remember to make your new password a strong one – a combination of upper- and lowercase letter, numbers, and symbols – that's no fewer than eight characters long. And don't reuse the password from any other online service.
