Facebook is reportedly planning to rebrand the company by changing its name. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to announce the name change at the company’s Connect conference on October 28 but it could happen earlier too, The Verge reported. The rebranding comes at a time when Facebook is bashed with criticisms from leaked documents and a whistleblower’s account of the company’s ill practices. The rebranding would be for Facebook which currently serves as the parent company for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Oculus. With a new name for the company, the Facebook app would now fall under a new parent company. The rebranding is said to be in line with the company’s ambitions of being more than just a social media company. Facebook already offers one of the most popular social media apps including the leader in messaging apps, WhatsApp.
The company’s name change is also said to reflect its ambition of building the metaverse. The company announced earlier this year that it has set up a dedicated metaverse team. Earlier this week it announced plans of hiring 10,000 people within the European Union over the next five years to build its metaverse. Zuckerberg also expects Facebook to be known as a “metaverse company” and not as a social media company, the report added.
A rebranding could actually make sense for Facebook that clearly has big plans for the future. It would be similar to how Google operates under the parent company Alphabet while offering different services. The same would be applicable to Facebook which would have multiple services under one parent company.
Facebook did go through a rebranding process back in 2019 where it unveiled a new logo for the company. The idea behind this was to distinguish the Facebook company from the Facebook app. This branding continued in apps like WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram where the new logo was highlighted along with the message “from Facebook”. While this makes Facebook stand out, people naturally still associate the company with the app. A new name for the parent company could help Facebook distinguish itself from its products.
