Will Smith’s fit of anger was due to Rock's joke about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith's bald head. Jada had been shaving her head regularly since 2021 on account of alopecia areata. Despite apologizing, Smith was banned from attending the academy events for about ten years.

Heard too filed counterclaims against Depp and claimed $100 million in damages. The trial was live-streamed.
