  • The idea behind AI — which focuses on developing algorithms that build smart machines equipped with human intelligence to ease processes — originated in 1950 when mathematician Alan Turing published a research paper on ‘Computing Machinery and Intelligence.’
  • In 2018, the analytics sector touched $102.1 million in India, shows a study by Amazon.
  • And, almost 5% of the occupations have the potential to be completely automated.
From self driving cars and grammar recommendations to chatbots and technology-enabled hiring processes, artificial intelligence has helped people with a wide range of tasks. The human-like artificial intelligence is already answering queries with personal assistants like Alexa and Siri, thanks to the advancement in machine learning and data analytics.

Even after demonstrating its capabilities, businesses are baffled with the use of AI-based tools to grow and transform.

The idea

The idea behind AI — which focuses on developing algorithms that build smart machines equipped with human intelligence to ease processes — originated in 1950 when mathematician Alan Turing published a research paper on "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." It was then that a Turing Test was determined to see if the machines were intelligent enough.

AI-enabled systems have the potential to grasp knowledge and adapt to it as they make decisions. Soon after, the technology was widely adopted by companies such as Google, IBM and Apple.

The opportunities it brings to the table

Today, AI is being implemented across sectors — healthcare, finance, human resources and e-commerce. A recent study by Amazon revealed that the analytics sector touched $102 million in India last year.

As India embraces digitization, AI and automation also created job opportunities. However, there is still a talent shortage in the sector. The US has over 40% professionals skilled in big data and analytics. However, India is estimated to have less than 10% of data scientists that is available globally, according to LinkedIn.

In fact, there are as many as 97,000 job openings for analytics and data science in India.

The bad side

According to McKinsey, nearly half of the activities undertaken by the workers could be automated — including data processing and managing expertise. And almost 5% of the occupations globally have the potential to be completely automated.

As a result, nearly 400 million workers globally can be replaced by automation over the next decade. But few can stop an idea whose time has come. Victor Hugo might not known about it then, but his famous sentence suits the time of AI that we live in.
