WhatsApp has started rolling out multi-device support to more users on iOS and Android, allowing them to use the messaging app on other devices such as computers and tablets.

Multi-device support is a much-awaited feature and is already available for apps like Telegram. Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has been testing multi-device support for some time now.

What is WhatsApp multi-device support?

WhatsApp will allow users to connect up to four devices apart from your phone. It is to be noted that you can only connect non-phone devices such as computers and tablets to WhatsApp.

The main highlight of this feature is that once you have linked your device to WhatsApp, your primary device will not be required to be connected to the internet. This has been one of the drawbacks of WhatsApp Web as it stops working if the primary device loses connection or is turned off.

WhatsApp will sync your history on all these devices – this includes your chats, chat archives, contact names, starred messages and more. This ensures you enjoy the complete WhatsApp experience on all these devices and there is continuity, so you can pick up where you left off.

How to use WhatsApp on your computer or tablet

WhatsApp multi-device is currently in beta and can be enabled right from the app.

  • Make sure you are on the latest version of WhatsApp.
  • Open the app and click on the three-dot menu at the top-right corner.
  • Now, click on “Linked devices”.
  • Then, click on “Multi-device beta”.
  • Click on “Join Beta”.
You can also leave the beta by simply clicking on “Leave beta” if you are facing any issues and wish to wait for a stable rollout.

WhatsApp has mentioned that users may not be able to message or call from web or desktop to users who have an outdated version of the app on their phone.

WhatsApp is still missing an important feature that is available for apps like Telegram or Facebook Messenger – the ability to use the app on more than one smartphone.
