Popular messaging app WhatsApp regularly gets updated with new features that bring more functionality to the app. The app has finally started receiving one of the most awaited features – dark mode.

At present, dark mode is available only for WhatsApp beta for Android users. It is to be noted that the dark mode on WhatsApp is not pure black at present but a dark grey theme.

Once you opt for the dark theme, the background is changed to dark grey and the chat bubbles for sent messages are shown in green colour. It is possible that the stable version may get a true black dark theme, which is more suitable for AMOLED displays.

How to enable dark mode on WhatsApp

  • Dark mode is currently available only for WhatsApp beta users. The first thing you need to do is register as a beta tester for WhatsApp.
  • If you are already a beta user, make sure you are on the version 2.20.13. Check the Play Store for any updates.
  • Now, open WhatsApp and tap the overflow button (three dots) and click on ‘Settings’.
  • Now, go to ‘Chats’ and click on ‘Theme’.
  • You can choose from ‘Light’ and ‘Dark’ and a third option that depends on your Android version.
  • Users on Android 10 will get a ‘System Default’ option and Android Pie and below versions will get a ‘Set by Battery Saver’ option.
If you select ‘System Default’, the app will identify the theme used by the Android system and change the theme to light or dark accordingly. The ‘Set by Battery Saver’ option switches to dark or light theme based on your battery saver settings.
