Instagram Reels is getting a new update that will double the length of the videos you can upload, taking it from 15 seconds to 30 seconds.

The company claims edits will also be easier in the new update — allowing users to trim delete any clip. Even the timer is getting a rehaul with the ability to countdown from 10 seconds.

Instagram’s new short-video feature is looking to capture the market share left behind after TikTok was banned in the Indian market. In the global market, the Chinese app is its biggest competitor.

Instagram Reels still leaves the heavy lifting to users
The main selling point of TikTok was that you didn’t need to be a video-editing genius to upload good quality videos.

These updates to Instagram Reels may be a step in the right direction, but don’t fully address the pain points faced by some of the users.

There’s still a certain amount of manual editing involved when it comes to finding the right song and making sure it syncs with your video, rather than letting the technology carry a bulk of the load.

Instagram Reels Director, Tessa Lyong-Laing hinted that more updates may be in the pipeline. “We continue to improve Reels based on people’s feedback, and these updates make it easier to create and edit. While it’s still early, we’re seeing a lot of entertaining, creative content,” she said in a statement.
