Google has launched the ‘Material You’ redesign with updates to the user interface (UI) of Workspace apps. Part of Google’s Material design, ‘Material You’ focuses on customization and will roll out on all devices that run on Android 12. It introduces fresh design changes to Google’s Workspace apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. After you receive the update, you will notice a newly modified navigation bar with a pill-shaped oval, larger floating action buttons, and the use of Google’s Sans text that is said to improve readability with smaller font sizes. If you have a Pixel device, you can match the colour of the apps to that of your wallpaper, adding to a more personalized look with the Material You design. The feature is called Dynamic Color and it gives a more personalized look to each application.
Here’s what’s going to change in Google Workspace apps with the roll-out of Material You.
Gmail

Google Meet
The changes will appear on Google Meet Version 2021.09.19 and newer starting from September 19. The primary change in the redesign is the addition of the Dynamic Color feature and pill-shaped buttons.

Google Drive
In the update to Google Drive, you can see a pill-shaped highlight that lets you know about the tab you are currently on. It also features a thicker bar at the bottom, which has a different shade. The four colour plus symbol inside a circle will also see a change with the update. The changes will be available on Drive version 2.21.330 and newer starting on September 9.
Google Docs, Sheets, Slides
There will be a change in the toolbar's theme, while the background of the apps will remain the same. The changes are available on Docs, Sheets and Slides version 1.21.342 and newer starting from September 1.
Apart from these apps, there are changes coming to other Google apps like Calculator, Lens, Chrome, Contacts and GBoard with the Material You redesign.
To start, you will need to have either an Android 12 update or a Google Pixel device. On your Pixel device, you can view the themes based on your wallpaper colours applied by going to Settings > Wallpaper & style. The non-Pixel devices that do not have a Dynamic Color feature will use light blue colour accents throughout these apps.
