Google Drive will delete month-old trash starting today but there is a way to get it back

Google Drive trash management is set to change starting tomorrow. Any trash that has been lingering around for longer than a month will be permanently deleted.

If users wish to restore any of the files in their trash, they may do so before the 30-day time window closes. Otherwise, the document will be lost forever — almost.


On the off chance that you aren’t able to rescue your files in time — or just generally forgot that you were supposed to pull a document out of the trash — there is a way out. As an additional safeguard for users who are a part of a company, school or group. The administrators for G Suite have the option to restore items that were deleted from the trash for up to 25 days for active users.

The change was initially announced a month ago among a set of updates that the company claims will help Google Drive work more consistently with the rest of the G Suite applications like Gmail.

“Beginning October 13, 2020, we will change the retention policies for items in the Trash on Google Drive. With this new policy, any file that is placed in the Google Drive trash will be automatically deleted after 30 days,” Google said at the time.

While the automatic trashing feature may prove to be frustrating for some, there is a silver lining. Since Google Photos is enstating a limit on storage, the feature will automatically free up some extra space every month ensuring you efficiently utilise every bit of the 15GB storage quota that comes with free accounts.
