8 Sci-Fi Gadgets That Could Soon Become Real
Remember those awesome gloves in "Minority Report" that worked in conjunction with touchscreens?
"Star Trek" inspired Google's ideas for the future
Google has said that "Star Trek" inspired its vision for the future of computing, so maybe that's why Glass reminds us of the VISOR glasses Geordi La Forge wore in "Star Trek." Even though Google Glass can't help blind people perceive what's around them, there's a color-blind man who can now "see" color thanks to a VISOR-like device he created called the "Eyeborg."
If we all had Terminator 2-like glasses, we'd be able to identify potential threats
When news of a Google device with a heads-up display first hit the interwebs, people were quick to call them Google's Terminator glasses. In "Terminator 2," we see Arnold Schwarzenegger sporting a pair of glasses that lets him scan his surroundings to identify targets. Google hasn't made any mention of using Glass for such matters, but since it's holding hackathons for developers to come up with additional ways to use Glass, the possibilities seem endless.
"The Avengers" foresees the day when our brains merge with technology
Heads-up displays reached new heights in "The Avengers." When Tony Stark (played by Robert Downing Jr.) wears his suit, he's able to scope out potential threats, map out his route, and perceive his environment in 3D.
There's currently no robotic suit we can wear with a heads-up display, but by 2045, we're expected to reach a state of technological singularity where we're deeply integrated with machines.
Computerized contact lenses in "Mission Impossible 4" are a few steps ahead of Google Glass
In "Mission Impossible 4," we see computerized contact lenses where information gets displayed in relation to the wearer's field of view. They have facial recognition features and also print anything if you blink twice. We're not quite there yet, but a team of engineers has already created contact lenses embedded with an antenna, radio receiver, and LED display.
And maybe one day Google will ditch those "insanely dorky" glasses, and figure out a way to bring the power of Glass to contact lenses.
Eventually, our memories may be stored in the cloud
"Total Recall" showed off tons of futuristic tech, like robots and devices with heads-up displays. But let's take memory implantation, for example. In the movie, the government uses a pretty bulky device to implant false memories into peoples brains.
As of now, there's no sign that our memories will be hacked. But futurist Ray Kurzweil has predicted that around 2030, we'll have tiny nanobots implanted in our brains that will be able to back up our memories to the cloud, repair our organs, and make us smarter and healthier.
Robocop-like headsets are being development for law enforcement
Kopin Corporation has developed a headset for law enforcement that uses infrared to help locate criminals. The Golden-i device has a high definition camera for identifying suspects, can see through walls, and is operated through voice commands and head movements.
Touchscreen devices with flexible displays aren't just science fiction anymore
In the Canadian show "Earth: Final Conflict," we got a glimpse of what touchscreen devices with a flexible display would look like. In the show, the devices were small and had a rolled-up touchscreen.
Today, there's a handful of companies working on products with flexible displays. At CES this year, Samsung showed off its flexible OLED display. Apple is reportedly working on a smartwatch with a continuous, flexible glass display. And a Dutch company called Polymer released a bendable e-reader a few years ago, but has since shut down.
