6 before-and-after transformations of dead shopping malls that were given new lives
Antioch, Tennessee's Hickory Hollow Mall was hollowed out in 2011 after its two main department stores went bankrupt.
After undergoing a facelift, the building re-opened as the Global Mall at the Crossings in 2013. It's now a satellite campus of Nashville State Community college, and includes 617,000-square-feet of retail space, a recreation center, classrooms, a library, and an ice rink.

Mayfield Mall in Mountain View, California shut down due to declining sales in 1983, when HP moved in and transformed the building into offices.

The Westminster Arcade in Providence, Rhode Island — America's oldest shopping mall — opened in 1828. Over time, the building fell into disrepair, and closed in 2008 for a $10 million renovation.

In 2013, it re-opened as a micro-apartment complex. Today, there are 48 units (which average 300 square feet) as well as restaurants, a coffee shop, and a hair salon.
The One Hundred Oaks Mall, which opened in 1967, was Nashville, Tennessee's first large-scale enclosed shopping mall. Over time, the mall's profits plummeted.
In 2007, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center leased over half of 100 Oaks Mall's 800-square-feet. (The other half is still retail space today.) The former entrance was turned into the medical center's lobby, which leads into administrative offices and clinical rooms that took the place of shops.
Also in Tennessee, the Tri-County Mall in Oliver Springs once housed a 30-lane bowling alley with several shops and a Heck's department store. In 2009, it was converted into the Beech Park Baptist Church, which now seats 800 people. The former department store turned into classroom space for the church as well.

The Rainbow Centre Factory Outlet was an enclosed mall that opened in downtown Niagara Falls, New York in 1982. It didn't turn a profit until 1990, when Burlington Coat Factory and other outlets replaced its anchor tenant (Beir's Department Store) and several smaller shops. After Burlington closed in 1999, the entire mall went under, too.

About a third of the building was renovated, and the building re-opened as the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute with a Barnes and Noble in 2012. The city still owns the other two-thirds of the mall for future redevelopment.
