TCU Professor Criticized For Sending Study Group Email Only To 'Students Of Color'

A religion professor at Texas Christian University is being criticized after specifically reaching out to students "of color" for an extra help study group, according to Inside Higher Ed.

Santiago Piñón, an assistant professor of religion at TCU, sent an email to nine of his students that he identified as "students of color" to "discuss the challenges they may face during the semester."

He closes the email by writing, "I don't mind if this would turn out to be a study session for my STUDENTS OF COLOR ONLY."

One student who recieved the email told IHE, "After I read it, I read the names [of the other recipients] and they were just Hispanic last names." This student said her last name is of Hispanic origin, although she doesn't strongly identify as Hispanic, and she laughed when she opened the email.

Piñón told IHE that the email was "misunderstood," and that he "should have been more clear in that the study group is open to all students." However, as Gawker points out, this seems to contradict his claim of the study group being for "students of color only."
