Will never sign NPT to get into NSG, says Sushma Swaraj

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said that India will never sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to get into Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), and that talks with China over its opposition to India's entry are still on.

"If someone does not agree to something once, it doesn't mean that they will never agree to it. We are continuing our efforts in engaging with China on this issue," said Swaraj in Lok Sabha.

It was after the opposition members raised queries about India’s bid for entry into NSG that Swaraj stated this.

When India had applied for the entry into the elite nuclear club, it had got the support from several member nations. However, Beijing had stated that since India hasn’t signed the NPT, it should not be allowed to be a member of NSG. Even though it acknowledged India's impeccable non-proliferation record, it said that if the rule has to be mended, ally Pakistan should also be allowed to become an NSG member.
