Stunning bird's-eye photos of Hong Kong show how overcrowded it is

Urban Jungle #02

Andy Yeung

Hong Kong is home to over 7.3 million people, according to 2015 census figures.

The Hong Kong-based photographer Andy Yeung has found a creative way to capture just how crowded the city is in a series of images showing tightly-packed skyscrapers taken with a drone.

Yeung was inspired to work on the project after seeing an aerial view of Hong Kong out of his plane window while flying back to the city from Europe.

"Looking down, I saw gazillions of buildings soaring high into the skies," he told Business Insider over email. "The idea of creating a drone series offering a glimpse into the reality of living in one of the most densely populated areas of the world just sprung to my mind."

While the photos show Hong Kong's beauty, Yeung also wanted to convey how the city's lack of living space affects residents.

Hong Kong is "a great city," he said, "but lurking beneath the prosperity is a severe housing problem that depresses every dweller in this city living in horrid conditions."
