As an impeachment trial against President Donald Trump unfolds less than a year ahead of the election, the White House is increasingly highlighting plans to jolt the US economy.
White House spokesperson Judd Deere said in an email Thursday that the administration is currently studying "numerous proposals" for a second round of tax cuts, this time with a focus on the middle class. The package could offer the Trump campaign a revamped message for voters after the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act failed to gain widespread support.
Trump has renewed focus on the so-called Tax Cuts 2.0 package in recent days, teasing on Wednesday that a "very big" plan would be released within 90 days. Administration officials have taken to cable television to boast of the growth the stimulus measures would be expected to generate.
But it's unlikely that further Republican tax legislation would get through the Democrat-controlled House in an election year. The Trump administration sent conflicting signals on tax cuts over the summer, reversing on the type of package it would push within a matter of days. Since then, details have remained elusive even among lawmakers.
"There's nothing beyond random Trump and Kudlow comments on TV," said Ashley Schapitl, the press secretary for Senator Ron Wyden, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee. "We don't have anything resembling legislation-not even a one pager."
