The Chinese companies have set their sights on long-term liquefied natural gas contracts tied to Qatar's North Field East project, and a deal would mark the first such partnership between China and Qatar.
China is the world's largest liquefied natural gas importer, and the two Chinese companies are expected to invest a 5% stake in two separate gas liquefaction units, out of the four total being constructed.
Earlier this month, officials from Qatar Energy met with representatives from Chinese energy majors in Singapore, which also included Cnooc and Beijing Gas Group, according to Bloomberg.
ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips are also set to acquire stakes in Qatar's liquefied natural gas expansion project.

Meanwhile, Russia's Gazprom said earlier this week it would cut natural gas supplies to Germany and other parts of Europe via the Nord Stream pipeline.
