Panic gripped the Indian stock markets on Friday as concerns of a new, highly mutated COVID-19 variant and overall weakness in other Asian markets led to a market-wide decline.This is likely to be the third straight weekly decline for the Nifty 50 and the Sensex, and the worst one in nearly nine months. Nifty is down 2.91% (as of 3:30 p.m) for the week over and a similar decline in the previous. The blue chip index has lost over 5% in the last two weeks alone.

The benchmark Nifty 50 opened over 200 points lower on weak cues across the Asian markets. As of 3:30 p.m., crucial sectors like finance, metals, software, oil and gas were amongst the major drag-downs, pulling down the overall Nifty index by over 2%.
